WE FEED THE HUNGRY,
HOUSE THE HOMELESS,
KEEP PEOPLE IN THEIR HOMES, AND
HELP IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS

Established 1968

Pike County Outreach and Bridgehaven

The Outreach Council of Churches has fed the hungry, sheltered the homeless, and aided the helpless in Pike County since 1968.

Dear Friends,

A group of concerned Pike County residents, churches, and organizations had a vision in the 1960's to collaborate to bring together resources to assist their neighbors in need. This vision grew to become the Pike County Outreach Council of Churches Inc.

Today "Here in Ohio, people are hurting like they haven't hurt since the great depression of the 1930's. …I have heard repeated stories of hard-working Ohioans who cannot find work despite their persistence..." (Jennifer Brunner, Ohio Secretary of State). This is so true in Pike County where the latest figures show an unemployment figure of 16.7%. Pike County residents are hurting.

They are hungry. We now have people coming for food every 7 days. Many of these households have two and three families living together. Many have never before come to the pantry.

They are looking for jobs but lack transportation or gas money. Several people had found employment in Zahn's Corner and in Jackson but were unable to take the positions because they did not have transportation or the income to pay someone to drive them to the job.

They are in need of medications but do not have health insurance. We helped a man with blood pressure medications for his wife. It was only $12 but she had no income or health insurance and he received SSI and there was not enough money after paying their bills to buy her prescription.

They come looking for blankets, kerosene, and space heaters.

They are looking for shelter because they have been evicted or their home has been foreclosed. Just this week, a woman called Bridgehaven to see if we had room for her and her 4 children because the bank was foreclosing on their home and she and her children would be put out on the street. She had no where to go.

On the following report, you will see how many services the Outreach Council was able to provide in 2009. In most cases, we were only able to assist with $20-$30 because we did not have enough to help with more. YOU can make a difference.

Some ideas that I have to improve the lives of our neighbors are:

  1. a transportation network in which people would volunteer to drive someone to a job or appointment
  2. new computers and computer training classes
  3. a small business venture to train prospective employees
  4. enough donations to help the same or a greater number of households with at least $50 toward their emergency needs
  5. transitional housing for the homeless who are not ready to be on their own
  6. enough food to give additional food items each week

As always, your donations will further the good work being done in your community. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Bless you for all that you do.

Judy Dixon
Executive Director

Pike County Outreach Council of Churches Inc.

Serving Pike County since 1968
2009 ANNUAL REPORT

We feed the hungry

5,289 households = 18,732 people = 168,588 meals = approx. 158,670 pounds.
Due to our economy, households may get food from the pantry once every seven days.

In 2009, food for the pantry was purchased locally and obtained through the FreeStore Foodbank at a cost of $10802.39.

The majority of food distributed to hungry Pike Countians was donated by churches in Pike, Ross; and Franklin counties; by groups; individuals; and food drives organized by the Boy Scouts, the Leo Club, 4-H, social clubs, schools, businesses and organizations. We were blessed with contributions of more than 26,000 items. Our Farmers and Hunters Feed the Hungry program provided 3007 pounds of venison. If we had purchased these items, it would have cost more than $32,000!! We are very grateful for these donations because Outreach could not have afforded to buy such a substantial amount of food.

The Outreach Council is only able to feed so many people because you care. Please continue to contribute food and money so that we can provide for the increasing number of hungry people in our county.

In 2009, through our partnership with the FreeStore Foodbank, mobile pantries, which can feed up to 200 households, were held in Beaver, Latham, and Waverly. Within this program, food is transported to accessible locations where volunteers help each household choose at least 50 pounds of food. This is a great opportunity for people who have difficulty coming to the Outreach pantry. It's an economical and efficient use of time and money. You can sponsor a mobile pantry. Feed 100 households with a tax deductable donation of $500, 150 households for $750, and 200 households for $1000. Call Bridgehaven at 740-941-4348 for more information. We are a 501-C3 organization.

The Outreach Council choice pantry is open Monday through Friday 9-3 and Thursday 6-8. It is staffed by Mature Services employees and volunteers who blessed us with 1673.5 hours of their time to feed the hungry. Thank you

We need pantry volunteers!! The employees of US Bank each donated eight hours of their time to the pantry. Could your company allow its employees to volunteer just three-hours a month? Individuals, businesses and organizations contact us to volunteer for three-hour shifts at the pantry. Call us! (Pantry: 740-947-7151 or Bridgehaven: 740-941-4348).

We house the homeless

148 people = 3543 shelter nights in 2009

30.5% more people resided at Bridgehaven in 2009 than in 2008. An additional 79 people were turned away because the shelter was full.

Men, women, and children were provided a place to stay and the opportunity to re-establish their lives. Bridgehaven offered residents a home while they looked for financial. stability. They were referred to counseling through our partnerships with the Pike County Recovery Council and Scioto Paint Valley Mental Health and given the possibility of assistance with permanent housing. We offered structure and support that allowed residents to pull their lives together.

Bridgehaven is staffed 24 hours a day with caring paid employees and volunteers.

Could you donate five hours a month volunteering at Bridgehaven? Our staff and finances are stretched to the limit. We need caring people to volunteer on Saturday and Sunday for five hours – Autumn will gladly adjust her schedule to fit your schedule.

We always need the basics-laundry detergent, dishwashing liquid, toilet tissue, paper towels milk, butter, hamburger (Can you imagine how much is used when there are 15 residents at Bridgehaven?) as well as someone to call when we have an electrical, plumbing, or other maintenance problem.

Do you have an opening in your company? We have people at Bridgehaven who are eager to work. Are you available to transport someone to a job or an appointment? Can you donate one meal a month to the shelter. Our residents really look forward to the delicious home cooked meals now donated. Call Bridgehaven at 740-941-4348 to help.

We keep people in their homes

Through a two year grant (2009-2010) from the Housing Trust Fund, we assisted 298 families with up to $100 towards a utility bill and paid housing deposits for 10 Bridgehaven households.

Unfortunately, all of the utility money was spent in 2009 leaving nothing for 2010! Clearly the need is. great because a two year allotment was spent in one year. Regretfully we can not apply for additional funding for 2010.

We help in emergency situations

365 emergency services provided

Emergency services included help with medicine, work boots, heat, water, fans, heaters, firewood, kerosene, baby formula, birth certificates, identification cards, etc.

With Outreach Council donations as well as the Presbyterian Deacon's Fund and the Grace United Methodist Pastor's Fund which we distribute, we have been able to assist households with $15-30 toward their emergency -- a small amount since some bills are in the hundreds of dollars. People are grateful for whatever help they can get.

Can you imagine what we could do if we had additional funds? Please donate to help your neighbors with basic needs.

NO ONE SHOULD BE HUNGRY BECAUSE THEY RAN OUT OF FOOD, OR SICK BECAUSE THEY CAN'T GET THEIR MEDICINE, OR COLD BECAUSE THEY COULDN'T PAY THEIR UTILITY BILL OR LIVING IN THEIR CAR BECAUSE THEY HAVE NO PLACE TO GO.

Thank you for all that you have done and thank you for your continued support so that we can further benefit our community.

HISTORY

From 1968, the Outreach Council had worked from donated space, which frequently changed.

In 1997, we acquired a run-down home, which was converted to a pleasant homeless shelter — (Bridgehaven, 109 W. 2nd St., Waverly, OH.)

In 2002, the two-story building next door (107 W. 2nd St.) became available. For the first time ever, we were able to dispense food and other services from a single location.

FUNDING

The Outreach Council is funded through its Friends and Supporters, regional church bodies, local congregations, organizations, companies, the CROP walk, volunteers and grants.
